Dutch sectorplan: remote sensing, geodata, climate change and society

The Sectorplan is an instrument of the Dutch government to structurally invest 200 million € annually in the foundation of scientific research and education. This helps universities to strategically expand human capacities in a specific theme to strengthen a sector. The Sectorplan Beta II / Section Earth and Environmental sciences (EES) comprises four national policy domains: Safe living environment (Veilige Leefomgeving), Agriculture, water and food (Landbouw, water en voedsel), Energy transition, circularity and sustainability (Energie-transitie, circulatiteit en duurzaamheid), and Health (Gezondheid). In 2026, the mid-term evaluation of the Sectorplan Beta II funding scheme is coming. This talk will highlight the key achievements of the University of Twente (UT) sectorplan staff Earth and Environmental Sciences in the topics of Carbon Cycle, Water Cycle, Disasters and Threads, Food Security and Spatial Challenges. The contributing faculties within UT are the Faculty of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) and the Multidisciplinary Water Management group at the Faculty Engineering Technology (ET-MWM). Majority of the positions focus on satellite data analysis and geo-information handling. Nederlands: Het Sectorplan is een instrument van de Nederlandse overheid om jaarlijks 200 miljoen euro structureel te investeren in wetenschappelijk onderzoek en onderwijs. Dit helpt universiteiten om strategisch staf op een specifiek thema uit te breiden om een sector te versterken. Het Sectorplan Beta II / Sectie Aard- en Milieuwetenschappen (AMW) omvat vier nationale beleidsdomeinen: Veilige leefomgeving, Landbouw, water en voedsel, Energie-transitie, circulariteit en duurzaamheid, en Gezondheid. In 2026 vindt de tussentijdse evaluatie plaats van de Sectorplan Beta II-subsidieregeling. Deze lezing belicht de belangrijkste resultaten van de sectorplanmedewerkers van de Universiteit Twente (UT) binnen de Aard- en Milieuwetenschappen op het gebied van koolstofcyclus, watercyclus, rampen en bedreigingen, voedselzekerheid en ruimtelijke vraagstukken. De deelnemende faculteiten binnen de UT zijn de Faculteit Geo-informatie Wetenschappen en Aardobservatie (ITC) en de groep Multidisciplinair Waterbeheer- en Management van de Faculteit Engineering Technology (ET-MWM).
